Outfit: Western or Boho?

Outfit - western or boho feat

I’ve been meaning to photograph and blog this outfit for a while now because it’s so fun! It’s another sweater dress from Marshalls. I love the funky designs and color mixes of hot pink, navy, and tan. Standing by a mound of snow nearly as tall as me really makes those colors pop!

My favorite Timex watch and a few colorful handmade bracelets gave my wrists a little more personality.

I wore it over the weekend, thinking it was kind of 60’s bohemian inspired, but my Dad said I looked like a country singer (guess I finally lived up to the name “Sami Jo!”) — what do you think? Western or Boho?

Outfit: My Scandinavian Sweater Dress

Scandinavian Sweater Dress winter outfit feat

Stan came home last Thursday with the surprising news that it had snowed in Israel. I had very little sympathy because of bone-chilling cold we had the entire time he was gone, but I’m so glad he’s back! We have done nothing but cuddle and watch House of Cards all weekend.

It’s March, but I can still get away with sweater dresses for another few weeks, right? This one reminds me of Scandinavian Fair Isle sweaters and my tights mirror the deep blue in the Swedish flag (did you know I’m part Swedish? And Danish, Irish, Italian, and possibly some small part Native American).

Snowed in? Here are 10 DIYs You Can Make With Stuff In Your House

hot cocoa feature

1. Homemade Hot Cocoa.

You can still enjoy this homemade hot chocolate, even if you don’t have a cute mason jar mug to store it in.

2. Homemade No-Cook Play Dough.

This is a great craft to keep kids (or playful adults) busy for a while, and it’s very easy to make.

4. DIY Vanilla Coconut Sugar Scrub.

Add homemade sugar scrub to the mix, and you’ve got a spa day! If you don’t have coconut oil in the house, use canola or olive oil instead.

If you’ve got a spare frame, cardboard, and fabric lying around, turn them into a jewelry organizer! Organizing that tangled jewelry collection should take a while…

7. Yarn Pom-Pom Garland.

Got yarn? This super-cute garland is easy to make, but time-consuming, so it should keep you busy for a while. Even if you only have one or two colors of yarn, it will still look very pretty!

8. Tissue Paper Pom-Poms.

I hate the color of our kitchen (yucky green), but we haven’t gotten around to painting it yet, so I keep a few colorful tissue paper pom-poms hanging up in there.

9. Glitterize a Pair of Shoes.

Jazz up an old pair of shoes with glitter and ModPodge.

DIY Valentine Candle Holders - poorandpretty

10. Conversation Heart Candle Holder.

If you lose power (let’s hope not!), you’ll probably burn a few candles. (But be careful not to burn too many, or leave them on for too long). I love placing tealights in larger glass jars or candle holders and surrounding them with lots of different things: conversation hearts (great for Valentine’s Day), confetti… I’ve even used shamrock sprinkles for St. Patrick’s Day.

Stay safe and warm, everyone! xo

Outfit: The Tassel Top!

Tassle tank Ruche outfit feat

I know I just did an outfit post last week, but I had to show you this tassel tank top! It’s the Anepalco Embroidered Top from Ruche, and it might be my favorite top ever. I’d been eyeing it for a while and I finally bought it (and the long pink cardigan) for myself before deciding to curb my spending habits in an effort to pay off my student loans by the end of 2016. It will be tough, but I can do it!

Speaking of student loans and education… 2015 marks my 10-year anniversary of my high school graduation, which floored me. When I was 18, I thought I’d be a famous actress, married, with a kid or two by now. When I first realized it had been 10 years, I started to feel a lot of pressure. I’ve been invited to a private Facebook group where all of my classmates have been posting old and new photos of who they were and who they’ve become. Many of them are married and have children. I started thinking, why aren’t I married? Why don’t I have kids? Oh god… they’ll be asking me that at my reunion! I have done nothing with my life!!!

Whoa. Then I remembered: I don’t define success by having a husband or kids. I’m pretty darn happy with who I am, and what I’ve accomplished. I have a small business, this blog, and an amazing boyfriend who I do not feel I need to marry just because everyone else is doing it. We’ll know when we’re ready, but for now, life is good. And seriously, thank goodness I don’t have kids because then I wouldn’t be able to pay off my student loans in two years. Isn’t it crazy how your perspective changes as you age? ;)

Outfit: Snow White & Cranberry Red

Snow and Cranberry outfit feat

Snow and Cranberry outfit jump via @poorandpretty

I am feeling pretty pumped about 2015. I haven’t declared any “official” resolutions, but I want to focus on two things: networking and my relationship with Stan.

As far as networking goes, I can’t wait for Monarch Workshop in March! The women behind it are such an inspiring group of female entrepreneurs. I’m so looking forward to chatting with them and soaking up their collective knowledge.

The tricky part is balancing more networking and social events with, well, less networking and social events. I do a lot of things. My full-time job, this blog, and the Poor & Pretty Apothecary take up most of my time. Often, they eat up too much of my time and I forget to take a night off to do something special with Stan. This year, I will make that happen!

Stan certainly helps me with all of my crazy extra-curricular activities. How awesome is he for stomping around in the snow with me to take these photos?

And speaking of awesome: check out my new coat! Eeek! I received this from my Dad for Christmas. You miiiiight have noticed that I’d been wanting it for a while. It’s the Haven’t Seen You In Ears Coat from ModCloth, which is 70% off right now! I’m so in love with it. I’m really picky about coats and this has everything I wanted: peacoat style, pockets, cute color, hood. The adorable ears were a happy, happy bonus. Another bonus? I got these pants for only $6 from Avenle. Win!

Alright, I’m sure you’ve had enough of me being a ham for a day. I hope your new year is off to a great start!
