Life Lately: florapothecarie, Los Angeles, Glorious Pink Hair, and a Red Panda

Life Lately feat

I thought it was about time I come out of hiding and say hello. Life lately has been a wild ride, and I wanted to share a little bit about what I’ve been up to these past few months!

florapothecarie lineup

In January, I re-branded my product line and launched florapothecarie! (flor-uh-poth-uh-cary) Still 100% natural, but now with even more organic ingredients and beautiful new labels. I could write a whole separate post on my decision to rebrand (I may still!), but for now I will say this: it’s always a tough decision, but I did it for a few reasons: I want to be self-employed someday soon, and I wasn’t charging nearly enough for my products in order to pay myself, so I knew I needed to raise my prices. I also felt the name “Poor & Pretty” did my high-quality, handcrafted products a disservice, so I knew I needed a new name. I wanted to bring color back into my branding (I love color!), so I knew the aesthetic needed to change. I wanted to get away from Etsy. Anyway, it’s done and launched and beautiful and I’m so happy! You can shop the full lineup on my new website right here!

deodorant cream_1000

OH! As part of my re-brand, I launched a product I’ve been working on for months: a natural cream deodorant (or deodorant paste). BIG thanks to my team of testers for trying it out and giving me such great feedback. They were totally in love with it, and I think you will be too. Buy it here.

Sami February 2016 Getty Villa LA

Last month, my wonderful incredible loving uncle flew me out to visit him and my aunt in Los Angeles. He thought I could use a little sunshine and warm weather, and he was so so right. The week I visited, it was sunny and 80-90 degrees every day (and I skipped out on a few New England snow storms). We visited the Getty Villa (above) and the Griffith Observatory, saw the Oscar-nominated short films, had dinner and a movie in the swankiest movie theatre I’ve ever been in, and relaxed on the beach.

Zuma Beach Malibu

Knowing me as well as he does, one day my uncle dropped me off at Zuma Beach (in Malibu, right off the Pacific Coast Highway), and left me alone while he went on a three-hour bike ride. The sun, the sand, the sea all called to me. I’ve always felt drawn to Southern California, and every time I visit, I feel like I’m home. I don’t know what this means quite yet, but I’m keeping my mind and heart open to the possibilities of my future.

Sami-Boudoir-cropped

I’m also totally in love with my pink ombré hair, which I can’t believe I never told you about! Of course, it was done by my super-talented bestie, Mish Jolie. IN OCTOBER. So yeah, I thought you should know about it. The photo above is from a boudoir shoot I did shortly after getting my hair done. Photographed by the lovely Cassandra Madeline, styled by Sammy Vigorito, hair & makeup by Rachel Toussaint. Truthfully, I’ve been struggling with feeling sexy and confident in my body for a long, long time. The boudoir shoot was my Christmas gift to myself, and worth every penny.

Red Panda - Beardsley Zoo

Also: I’m seeing someone new. His name is Rochan, and he is a red panda. Ha! Kidding. Sort of. I am seeing someone new. It’s very new, and very exciting, and that’s all I will say about it for now. Except that he took me to see this ADORABLE red panda at the Beardsley Zoo last weekend, and I almost lost my mind. He gets me.

xoxoxoxo!

Coming Soon: florapothecarie

florapothecarie brand board_550

Happy new year, friends! I hope your holidays were filled with joy, laughter, and delicious food. I’m coming out of hibernation for a quick update on the Apothecary. You know how I said I’ve been secretly working on rebranding? I’m so excited to share it with you! Say hello to florapothecarie!

florapothecarie brand board

florapothecarie is handcrafted plant-based beauty, inspired by natural healers and faerie legends of yesteryear. It’s stepping away from technology and into the outdoors, embracing the natural beauty surrounding us. It’s stopping and smelling the roses, and running in an open field. It’s picking daisies from the side of the road, and soaking in a tub sprinkled with petals.

The new product line will feature a few favorites from Poor & Pretty Apothecary, along with some new ones. I’ve still got quite a bit of work to do — new website, product photography, new business cards, and all that fun stuff that goes a long with rebranding! But, I plan to launch on February 1st! Yay!

Sneak Peek Inside the Poor & Pretty Guide to Natural Beauty on a Budget

eBook cover with text_square

eBook cover with text

My very first eBook — the Poor & Pretty Guide to Natural Beauty on a Budget — has been out for just over a week now, so I thought I’d give you a little peek inside. It’s so much more than DIYs! Have a look at the contents:

Natural Beauty on a Budget - Sami Jo Jensen @poorandpretty_contents

Though it started as a compilation of natural beauty tutorials, as I was putting it together, I realized that my eBook was lacking a whole lot of foundational knowledge. Sure, you can jump right into trying out DIY masks and shampoos, but how will you be able to “solve” your skincare problems without knowing what type of skin you have? Or what effects different essential oils and ingredients will have on your skin, hair, and body? Even though I knew this would make the writing process take a lot longer, I knew I had to include this information in the book.

Natural Beauty on a Budget - Sami Jo Jensen @poorandpretty_beautybasics

Adding in basic body care tips, a compendium of natural ingredients and essential oils (as well as ingredients to avoid) more than doubled the page count, but it turned the book into a real reference guide. Whether you’re just beginning to explore making your own cosmetic creations or you’ve been doing this for a while, you’ll refer back to this guide a lot, I promise!

Natural Beauty on a Budget - Sami Jo Jensen @poorandpretty_recipe

The best part? Photos! Don’t you hate when you buy a DIY guide or a recipe book without photos? I need a visual cue so I know how it’s supposed to turn out! I made sure to include photos of almost every tutorial in this book. :)

Beauty Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar + DIY Hair Rinse & Astringent

Beauty Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar apples lead

It’s apple season!!! Stan and I went apple picking last weekend — one of my favorite fall pastimes. :) I’m a big fan of Cortland and Honeycrisp, and I typically use Honeycrisp or Granny Smith in my Apple Cup Pies. As tasty as apples are, did you know they’re also good for your skin and hair? Apple cider vinegar particularly so. Here are a few things it does:

Beauty Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar via @poorandpretty

1. Restores pH. Possibly the best thing about apple cider vinegar is that it balances the pH levels of our skin and hair. Having a balanced pH is vital to beauty because if our skin or hair are too alkaline, they’ll become dry and flaky, and open your body up to germs and bacteria. An acidic pH leads to breakouts and inflammation.

2. Natural Astringent. Along with restoring pH levels, apple cider vinegar removes dirt and excess oil and treats acne when used as an astringent. Dilute with an equal mixture of water and ACV.

3. Nonabrasive exfoliant. The malic acid in apple cider vinegar dissolves dead skin cells without scraping the skin, so it’s gentle enough to use on most skin types as long as it’s diluted.

4. Prevents Dandruff. Mixed with water, apple cider vinegar makes a great hair rinse. Malic acid gently exfoliates, removes scalp build-up, and balances the scalp’s pH level, contributing to a healthy, dandruff-free scalp.

2. Stimulates Hair Growth. In addition to promoting and maintaining overall scalp health, apple cider vinegar also prevents hair loss and stimulates hair growth.

Ready for the DIY two-in-one apple cider vinegar hair rinse & astringent?

Apple-Cider-Vinegar-Hair-Rinse-and-Astringent-via-@poorandpretty

Combine equal parts apple cider vinegar with water and pour this mixture into a spray bottle. That’s it! You can add a few drops of essential oils to try and mask the vinegar smell, if you’d like. I’d suggest lavender or peppermint.

When using it as a hair rinse:

  1. Wash your hair as you normally would, and rinse.
  2. Spritz the apple cider vinegar hair rinse liberally all over your hair and massage into your scalp with your fingers.
  3. Allow the hair rinse to sit for a full minute. (I like to pull my hair up into a hair claw for this.)
  4. Rinse thoroughly, and follow up with conditioner.

When using it as an astringent:

  1.  Wash your face as you normally would.
  2. Close your eyes and lightly spritz the apple cider vinegar astringent all over your face — be careful around your eyes!
  3. Allow the astringent to dry on your skin, then follow up with your favorite moisturizer.

This recipe comes straight from my eBook, which is almost ready for launch! Want to be the first to know when it’s available? Sign up here to be notified when it launches!
