Friday Faves: Winter is Coming

11-14-Friday-Faves-Winter-feature

We had our first little snowfall of the season this morning! Time to break out all those winter accessories you’ve been storing. Or, you know, buy some new ones. ;)

11 14 Friday Faves Winter

1. Hot Stuff Thermal Mug by Ban.do. I have this unusually long (1/4 mile) walk from my car to the door at work, so I’ve usually got a hot beverage in tow to warm up my morning walk.

2. Color Stacked Gloves via Anthropologie. I have a thing for mis-matchy winter accessories. I’ve got thick socks that would go really well with these.

3. Haven’t Seen You In Ears Coat via ModCloth. This might just be the most awesome coat I’ve ever seen. The hood has little faux bear ears!

4. Touchscreen Thread via Urbanstein. This is cool: turn any gloves into touchscreen gloves with this thread.

5. Just For You Gift Set via Ruche. A cozy sweater, cute hat, and pretty accessory all in one set? I’m in.

6. Whipped Body Butter via Poor & Pretty Apothecary. I know, it’s a shameless plug for my own product. But in all seriousness, I have been using this daily and it is saving my hands! Back off winter, your dry skin is no good here!

Summer skincare tips & top picks

A few of my friends have asked me for tips on getting rid of acne or basic skincare maintenance. Skin is either too oily or too dry; there’s almost never a happy medium. We all have this problem (even me!), and of course it varies with the seasons. I thought I’d share my summer skincare routine with you, along with some of my go-to products.

summer skincare tips and top picks - poor and pretty

1. I notice my skin is the clearest when I wash my face at night. Right now, I’m using a cream cleanser I’m developing myself, but my favorite retail cleanser is the Burt’s Bees Soap Bark and Chamomile Deep Cleansing Cream. It’s made entirely from natural ingredients and doesn’t include harsh chemical detergents that cause your skin to dry out.

2. I always, always, always follow up with my homemade rosewater and witch hazel astringent. I used to be terrible at using astringents, but now that it’s a part of my routine, my skin stays much cleaner. It’s super easy to make — you can find most of the ingredients at your local health food store, or online. After using your cleanser, put a few drops of the astringent on a cotton ball and swipe over your face (avoiding your eye area, of course). I sometimes use the astringent throughout the day to freshen up.

3. Exfoliate at least twice a week. Admittedly, I’m still working on this one. When I do remember to exfoliate twice a week, I get less acne. My favorite exfoliating masks are both homemade: DIY strawberry mask (strawberries contain salicylic acid, which fights off acne-causing bacteria) and DIY oat & cornmeal exfoliating facial scrub & mask (this one’s easier to keep on hand).

4. Traveling is no excuse not to take care of your skin! If you need a good on-the-go cleanser, try the Yes to Cucumbers Hypoallergenic Facial Towelettes. Infused with aloe vera, cucumbers, and green tea, these babies remove makeup, soothe, and clean your skin. Plus, they smell great, too!

5. Now that you’ve got the cleaning part down, don’t forget to moisturize, even if your skin is typically oily. One of the biggest reasons why skin becomes oily is because we wash it with all of these harsh cleansers, strip its natural oils, then we don’t bother replacing any of those oils. This makes our skin work extra hard to compensate for those missing oils, pumping them out and resulting in shiny, slick, yucky skin. Gross, right? So always replenish those oils — just like you would drink water after sweating. My favorite moisturizers are both from DressGreen: Purifying and Blemish Controlling Face Serum (best for drier skin) and Calming and Clarifying Face Cream (better for oilier skin). Like most people, I have combination skin, so I use these interchangeably. They’re both 100% natural and free of toxic chemicals.

6. Of course it’s Summer, so we can’t forget the sunscreen. Dermatologists suggest wearing sunscreen on your face daily because our facial skin is most susceptible to sun damage. My natural sunscreen of choice is Naked Bee’s Face & Body Moisturizing SPF 30 Sunscreen, which contains 70% organic content and is enriched with Vitamin C. It smells lovely and has no Parabens, Propylene Glycol, Laurel/Laureth Sulfates, or alcohol.

Be safe, don’t forget to drink lots of water and share your Summer skincare tips in the comments!

Bonus: want naturally beachy hair without going to the beach? Try making my DIY sea salt hair spray!

Tomorrow & Sunday: BUST Magazine Craftacular at the World Maker Faire

It’s here! Stan and I just checked into our {slightly sketchy} hotel, and we are excited about tomorrow! Even more awesome: BUST Magazine wrote a sweet spotlight on Poor & Pretty earlier this week.

Boy, is the Maker Faire HUGE! We stopped by to check in and find the Poor & Pretty booth and there were just all sorts of amazing things being set up — 3D printing, fire arts {yeah, my Dad will love that one}, robotics exhibits & demos, and lots of delicious food. Oh yeah, it’s more than just a craft fair. I highly recommend downloading the  Maker Faire app if you have an iPhone/iPad or Android.

Okay, okay, you’re wondering about the new products I’m introducing at the Craftacular, right? Well, here you go:

Red Velvet Cupcake Soap:

Mmm. It smells just like a red velvet cupcake, too, only with a buttercream frosting ;)

Coco Body Balm:

Coco Body Balm is a solid, twist-up lotion bar that packs a mighty powerful moisturizing punch. It shares many of its ingredients with Coco Balm — candelilla wax, certified organic cocoa butter, coconut oil, and jojoba oil — but it also contains highly emollient shea butter for an ultra skin-smoothing experience. Use it on your elbows, hands, feet, and other dry patches of skin. It also makes a great cuticle softener and can double as a lip balm if you don’t have your Coco Balm handy.

I brought a limited supply with me to the Craftacular, but they will be in stock in my Etsy shop by Columbus Day {October 8th}.

Friday Faves 8.10.12: A few obsessions

1. Origins Make a Difference™ Skin rejuvenating treatment lotion — since a majority of us suffer from chronic dehydration, so does our skin. I like this liquid lotion {it’s more the consistency of a toner} because it’s non-greasy, absorbs quickly, and is made without alcohol or other skin-hating chemicals.

2. Aveda Inner Light™ Mineral Dual Foundation in Astrid — Mish introduced me to my new favorite foundation. It can be used dry or wet for sheer to full coverage, it’s non-acnegenic, it doesn’t cake, and it’s made without parabens or talc. It’s also packaged very sustainably in a 100% post-consumer recycled clamshell and fits into Aveda’s refillable compacts.

3. Moonlight Snooze Herbal Tisane from Simpson & Vale — I’ve been having trouble sleeping lately, most likely because I’m nervous about the BUST Craftacular and my Kickstarter project, because I’m going to need to spend buckets of time making products for the fair. This herbal tisane helps ease my jittery nerves and calm me down enough to sleep. I recommend sipping it while you’re already in bed, reading a book or relaxing on the couch and watching a show or movie before bed.

4. Timex Originals Easy Reader with Multicolored Dial — Speaking of time, I am in love with the latest addition to my watch collection. I’ve been trying to switch up which watches I wear to work, but this one is definitely on my wrist a disproportionate amount of time. I just love the different colored markings! Watch courtesy of Timex.

5. Coach Tour Dress in Houndstooth from ModCloth — If you follow me on Instagram or are a Facebook fan, you’ll have noticed that I wore this dress on Wednesday. The trouble is, I’m so in love with it that I am tempted to buy it in all 10 styles. More on that next week!

Happy weekend!

Friday Faves: Once more, with feeling

I am loving a lot of things right now, but first and foremost is where I’ll be spending my Saturday and Sunday:

1. Cranwell Resort & Spa. Located in the Berkshires in Lenox, MA, is this beautiful historic hotel and spa, where my friend Michele and I will be spending our weekend relaxing, being pampered, and generally loving life.

2. Handcremes by Love + Toast. I have them in Honey Coconut and Mandarin Tea. I haven’t opened up the Mandarin Tea one yet {though I know it smells lovely from sampling it at Whole Foods}, but the Honey Coconut makes me feel like I’m on a marshmallow cloud of happiness. It smells divine! It’s also free of toxic chemicals like parabens, non-greasy, and made with a ton of skin-loving natural ingredients. Plus, the packaging is beyond adorable!

3. My job. I can’t even explain how happy I am working for Timex. I work with some really talented, fun, and inspiring individuals. I love the morning walk into the building, I love our huge solar panel installation, I love my growing collection of watches, and I love taking time to be silly with my prankster bosses {but of course, we get lots of work done, too!}. Most of all, I love how my creativity is embraced, nurtured, and encouraged.

4. My three new/vintage thrifted belts. These were each $1.50 at Goodwill. Best. Deal. Ever.

5. The Buffy musical episode, Once More, With Feeling. At least two times a year, I re-watch and obsess over the one musical episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, one of my favorite shows. I’ve had Spike’s song, “Rest in Peace” stuck in my head all week and most definitely rocked out to it in the car a few times.

What are you loving right now?
