Life Lately: florapothecarie, Los Angeles, Glorious Pink Hair, and a Red Panda

Life Lately feat

I thought it was about time I come out of hiding and say hello. Life lately has been a wild ride, and I wanted to share a little bit about what I’ve been up to these past few months!

florapothecarie lineup

In January, I re-branded my product line and launched florapothecarie! (flor-uh-poth-uh-cary) Still 100% natural, but now with even more organic ingredients and beautiful new labels. I could write a whole separate post on my decision to rebrand (I may still!), but for now I will say this: it’s always a tough decision, but I did it for a few reasons: I want to be self-employed someday soon, and I wasn’t charging nearly enough for my products in order to pay myself, so I knew I needed to raise my prices. I also felt the name “Poor & Pretty” did my high-quality, handcrafted products a disservice, so I knew I needed a new name. I wanted to bring color back into my branding (I love color!), so I knew the aesthetic needed to change. I wanted to get away from Etsy. Anyway, it’s done and launched and beautiful and I’m so happy! You can shop the full lineup on my new website right here!

deodorant cream_1000

OH! As part of my re-brand, I launched a product I’ve been working on for months: a natural cream deodorant (or deodorant paste). BIG thanks to my team of testers for trying it out and giving me such great feedback. They were totally in love with it, and I think you will be too. Buy it here.

Sami February 2016 Getty Villa LA

Last month, my wonderful incredible loving uncle flew me out to visit him and my aunt in Los Angeles. He thought I could use a little sunshine and warm weather, and he was so so right. The week I visited, it was sunny and 80-90 degrees every day (and I skipped out on a few New England snow storms). We visited the Getty Villa (above) and the Griffith Observatory, saw the Oscar-nominated short films, had dinner and a movie in the swankiest movie theatre I’ve ever been in, and relaxed on the beach.

Zuma Beach Malibu

Knowing me as well as he does, one day my uncle dropped me off at Zuma Beach (in Malibu, right off the Pacific Coast Highway), and left me alone while he went on a three-hour bike ride. The sun, the sand, the sea all called to me. I’ve always felt drawn to Southern California, and every time I visit, I feel like I’m home. I don’t know what this means quite yet, but I’m keeping my mind and heart open to the possibilities of my future.

I’m also totally in love with my pink ombré hair, which I can’t believe I never told you about! Of course, it was done by my super-talented bestie, Mish Jolie. IN OCTOBER. So yeah, I thought you should know about it. The photo above is from a boudoir shoot I did shortly after getting my hair done. Photographed by the lovely Cassandra Madeline, styled by Sammy Vigorito, hair & makeup by Rachel Toussaint. Truthfully, I’ve been struggling with feeling sexy and confident in my body for a long, long time. The boudoir shoot was my Christmas gift to myself, and worth every penny.

Red Panda - Beardsley Zoo

Also: I’m seeing someone new. His name is Rochan, and he is a red panda. Ha! Kidding. Sort of. I am seeing someone new. It’s very new, and very exciting, and that’s all I will say about it for now. Except that he took me to see this ADORABLE red panda at the Beardsley Zoo last weekend, and I almost lost my mind. He gets me.

All-natural deodorant challenge: first wave results

natural deodorant challenge - poor and pretty

It has been just over six weeks since I announced my all-natural deodorant challenge (though I actually started in early August). Here were the first 4 candidates, as well as my notes. I tried to give each one a minimum of two weeks’ trial to give my body time to adjust, but I couldn’t get nearly that far with some of them.

1. Alba Botanica Clear Enzyme Deodorant Stick in Aloe/Unscented — this one failed miserably. I couldn’t wear it for more than 2 days. Firstly, the deodorant was hard and sticky, and made my armpits really sticky, too. Both days I wore it, I was stinky by lunch. Sticky + stinky = no-go. I give it a 0/5.

2. Mere’s All Natural Naturally Absorbent Deodorant in Jasmine & Lime — I met founder Meredith Knechel at this year’s Trashion Fashion Show, and was immediately intrigued by her lotion-based deodorant. I will admit, the idea of rubbing lotion into my armpits seemed pretty weird, but of course you’re only supposed to apply it when your armpits are clean! Overall, it held up pretty well as long as I wasn’t doing anything super active. When I first started using it, I felt like I needed to reapply it halfway through the day, but towards the end of the two weeks, my body seemed to have adjusted pretty well to it. When I did smell a little, I think it was more because of the jasmine odor than my own B.O. I’m definitely going to try the unscented version. I was surprised with how little I had to use; this tin will last for months. I give it a 4/5.

3. Body Deodorant Rock by Crystal — My friend Beata has been using a deodorant crystal for a while now, and recommended that it be part of my challenge. It did take about a week or so for my body to adjust, but I really liked using this. It isn’t sticky or powdery, and doesn’t leave any residue, so it’s hard to know if you’ve put on “enough.” The only ingredient is 100% natural mineral salt crystal, so you just wet it and apply it to your armpits. I’ve found that it stings a little right after I shave if I have any nicks. It has no odor so it won’t conflict with any perfume or lotion you might use. It looks as if I’ve barely touched it, so I’m guessing this thing would last for years! I give it a 5/5.

4. Ada Rios Aluminum-Free Ladies Deodorant — I picked up this deodorant earlier this Spring and had been using it for a few months. It smells wonderful, goes on nicely, and isn’t sticky. BUT! I always felt like I had to reapply it at least once a day, even more often during the Summer. Plus, it has Propylene Glycol in it, which brings it down to a 2/5.

Putting these in order from best to worst, we have:

I’ll update again soon with my next round of challengers. Your recommendations are always welcome in the comments! :)

The all-natural deodorant challenge

natural deodorant challenge - poor and pretty

In my tireless quest to find the best all-natural bath & body products, my present focus is on deodorants. I know there is still a lot of debate over whether or not aluminum in antiperspirants is really all that bad for you, but I like to err on the side of caution. Here are four deodorants I’m currently testing out:

1. Alba Botanica Clear Enzyme Deodorant Stick in Aloe/Unscented.

2. Mere’s All Natural Naturally Absorbent Deodorant in Jasmine & Lime.

3. Body Deodorant Rock by Crystal.

4. Ada Rios Aluminum-Free Ladies Deodorant.

I’ll let you know how these work out for me. If you have other recommendations, please let me know in the comments!
