100% Pure Review + Mascara Giveaway!

100 Percent Pure natural cosmetics via @poorandpretty

I’m always on the lookout for natural cosmetics so when I stumbled across 100% Pure, I knew I had to give them a try. Unlike many “green-washing” companies out there, 100% Pure really means it when they say their products are entirely natural. They contain absolutely no synthetic chemicals, chemical preservatives, artificial colors or fragrances, harsh detergents, or other toxins. Nor do they test on animals or use any animal by-products, so they’re vegan as well. Their makeup is colored with fruit and vegetable pigments in lieu of minerals or synthetic dyes. Pretty awesome.

So let me introduce you to a few of my favorite 100% Pure products, then you can enter to win their black mascara!

100 Percent Pure scrub + mask via @poorandpretty

We’ll start with their Brightening Scrub + Mask. You know I’m a big fan of making my own facial scrubs and masks, but it’s good to have one on hand for those lazy days, or for traveling. 100% Pure’s Brightening Scrub + Mask is full of antioxidants and vitamins like pomegranate seed oil, strawberry, pineapple, papaya, and cranberry extracts, pink grapefruit essential oil… the list goes on and on. It gently exfoliates with tiny jojoba beads (those little colorful wax spheres I used to put on my cupcake soaps as sprinkles). It leaves my skin feeling refreshed, exfoliated, and moisturized.

100 Percent Pure primer + moisturizer via @poorandpretty

After I wash my face and dab on my homemade astringent, I follow up with 100% Pure’s Jasmine Green Tea Moisturizer. It absorbs quickly so I sometimes feel like I need to use a little more than is probably necessary, but I like that it doesn’t leave my skin oily. If I plan to wear anything more than tinted moisturizer, I’ll also dab on a tiny bit of their Luminous Primer. I don’t have much experience with primers, but this one seems to work pretty well. I’ll probably start wearing it more often because I really love how the light-reflective pigments in it give my skin a healthy glow.

100 Percent Pure foundation + tinted moisturizer via @poorandpretty

My first 100% Pure purchase was their sheer Fruit Pigmented Water Foundation in White Peach. While I love both their water foundation and tinted moisturizer, I wish they offered trial samples to help find the right color. It’s so hard buying foundation from the Internet unless you already know your shade. The foundation and tinted moisturizers are so smooth and hydrating, but the White Peach color is just a tad too orange for me. They do have a 30 day return policy though, so I’m sure if you run into the same issue, they’ll swap out the product for you. I think White Peach would look fine on me if I had a bit of a tan, but it’s definitely not my Fall/Winter color!

100 Percent Pure eyeliner + luminescent powder via @poorandpretty

At first, I thought the Luminescent Powder was just a fancy kind of blush, but it actually gives very sheer color and a whole lot of, well, luminescence! It really brightens up your skin, so I use it in conjunction with blush. The Creamy Long Last Eyeliner is true to its name and really does last all day! It’s normally such a pain to put on eyeliner — especially if you’re like me and don’t have a steady hand — so I appreciate the ease of putting this on.

100 Percent Pure lip stain and creme comparison via @poorandpretty

You might remember 100% Pure’s Lip Creme Stick and Lip & Cheek Stain from my roundup of natural lip sticks, balms, and glosses last month. I have the Lip Creme Stick in Perfect Naked Pink, which — also true to its name — gives my lips just a little color. The Lip Stain gives me much more color and I only have to use a tiny bit. It really does stain your lips, so it lasts throughout the day. It doesn’t have any shine to it, so I add my Coco Balm on top for a glossy finish. The above image gives you an idea of how my lips look when using my Coco Balm (top), the lip stain (left), and the creme stick (right).

makeup for Jordan's wedding

I used almost exclusively 100% Pure products at Jordan’s wedding, and it turned out beautiful and lasted all day, even in the sticky heat and rain.

Pucker Up (Naturally)!: 10 All-Natural Lipsticks, Balms & Glosses

10 Natural Lipsticks balms and glosses via @poorandpretty

I don’t wear very much makeup but I always have at least 3 lip products on hand at all times. I’ve usually got two different lip balms and a lipstick or gloss for a little extra color. And you know, it’s not easy finding natural lipsticks and non-petroleum lip glosses. Luckily, I’ve done the research and found a few I really love.

1. Handmade Coco Balm by Poor & Pretty: My 100% natural, vegan-approved lip balm is made with certified organic Cocoa Butter, Coconut Oil, Jojoba Oil, and Candelilla Wax, sweetened with all-natural Stevia extract. (Yes, my Etsy shop is back open! Just Coco Balms & Coco Body Balms for now, but I’ve got some ideas for the holidays, so stay tuned!)

2. Handmade Wild Pollen Lip Balm: You might remember this from my latest Maker Takes post. I’m all about DIY beauty, so I was very happy to find lip balm ingredients in June’s For the Makers box. Want to make your own? Get the tutorial and supplies here.

3. Ora’s Amazing Herbal Lip Balms: I bought this sampler gift box from Ora’s Amazing Herbal on Abe’s Market and I love my Vanilla and Earl Grey lip balms! The box also came with a Minty Cocoa flavor, but I’m not a big fan of the mint + chocolate combination, so I gave it to Stan. Check out all of their flavors and other all-natural products here.

4. Yes to Carrots Lip Butter: This is a great store-bought alternative to Burt’s Bees (which I find dries out my lips even more). They seem to have discontinued the original Carrot lip butter, but you can buy it in Berry, Mint, or Pomegranate from most drugstores or online here.

5. Fairness Gloss by PeaceKeeper Cause-Metics: I love the name of this company, and their commitment to fostering global peace. For example: the proceeds from this lip gloss support equal wage advocacy. The gloss is a lovely neutral color and made with organic castor oil, beeswax, carnauba wax, shea butter, and vitamin E — 75% organic ingredients! It doesn’t get goopy and sticky like petroleum glosses do.

6. Paint Me Loving Natural Lipstick by PeaceKeeper Cause-Metics: This looked much more pink online, but in person it is a very pale pink/neutral. It gives just a hint of color, which is nice because I like a more natural look.

7. Aveda Nourish-Mint™ Smoothing Lip Color in Sheer Melochia Bloom: This is my go-to lipstick when I want something with a bit more color. It’s a true pink, but it goes in sheer and tastes like mint and cinnamon! This color is no longer available, but the closest thing to it would probably be Fossil or Wild Plum.

8. Magnolia Lip Gloss by Au Naturale: A very pretty and shimmery pink lip gloss, made with olive, castor, broccoli seed, apricot and more lovely natural oils. This is great on its own or over lipstick.

9. 100% Pure Lip Creme Stick in Perfect Naked Pink: This is slightly darker and peachier than the Aveda lipstick and has more of an opaque matte finish. I love that it’s colored using fruit and vegetable pigments rather than minerals or synthetic dyes.

10. 100% Pure Lip & Cheek Stain in Cherry: I’ve never used a lip stain before, so this was interesting! You have to apply it very quickly or it will be darker on some parts of your lips more than others. It’s a very deep red, so I usually only apply one layer and the color lasts much longer than your average lipstick or gloss.

Before After 100 Percent Pure Lip Stain via @poorandpretty

It really is like staining your lips! On the left, I’m wearing only lip balm, and on the right, I’m using just one layer of 100% Pure’s Lip & Cheek Stain. I finish with lip balm or gloss to give it a little shine. I haven’t tried it on my cheeks yet — I’m afraid I’ll look like a clown! Oh, and it does not taste like cherry, so don’t lick your lips!

What are some of your favorite natural lipsticks, glosses, and balms? Did I miss any that I should absolutely try? Let me know in the comments!

Indie Spotlight + Giveaway: Joy Atkisson of Purely You Minerals

Joy Atkisson Purely You Minerals - Poor & Pretty

You might remember seeing Purely You Minerals’ lip gloss as one of my Friday Faves last week. Like you, I struggle with finding the perfect lip gloss and — even more of a hassle — the perfect foundation! So I’m happy to introduce to you Joy Atkisson, founder of Purely You Minerals.

Purely You Minerals 2 - Poor & Pretty

Purely You Minerals is a new line of mineral makeup that is not only good for you, it’s good for others, too. Purely You products do not contain talc, powdered starches, clays, bismuth oxychloride, or parabens, and are gluten free and never tested on animals. 10% of profits go directly to Bring Love In, a non-profit organization founded by Joy’s friends. Says Joy, “It is a beautiful thing that we can make a life changing difference in the world just by putting on our makeup. Purely You Minerals brings out the inner beauty in us all.” Today, she chats with us about skincare, running a small business, and of course, makeup! Don’t miss the giveaway, too! Details at the end of the post.

Purely You Minerals - Poor & Pretty

Poor & Pretty: Like many of us women, you struggled with skin problems and cakey makeup. What made you switch to mineral makeup?
Joy Atkisson: For years, I had been caught up in the nasty cycle of wearing makeup, breaking out, having to wear more makeup to cover it up, breaking out more. I tried every crazy “cure” you can think of… including egg on my face! True story. In 2007, mineral makeup started gaining popularity, so I decided to give it a try. It took a little while to get used to the messy powder and to learn what the heck a Kabuki brush is, but my skin started clearing up.

P&P: What makes mineral makeup so different?
JA: Quality mineral makeup allows your skin to breath and doesn’t clog your pores. It also appeals to my inner hippy because it doesn’t contain harsh chemicals, so it’s about as natural as you can get. What I truly love about it is that I don’t have to hide behind cake makeup. I can apply mineral makeup as fancy or as natural as I want and I still feel like ME! I love that!

P&P: So instead of continuing to buy mineral makeup, you decided to make it yourself. Why?
JA: Haha! I get this question a lot. The truth is…. I was broke! My husband and I had been married for a year, we had just had a baby, and I wanted to stay home with her. There was no extra room in our budget for expensive makeup. Most companies at that time were very expensive. I looked at the back of one of one of my jars and saw that there were only a few ingredients and I thought to myself, “I wonder if I could make this?” I seriously underestimated how hard it was going to be, but I love research so it really became a hobby. I would work on it during my daughter’s naps or late at night. Necessity is truly the mother of invention.

P&P: How is Purely You Minerals different from other brands?
JA: That is a key question! Purely You Minerals is made in small batches to insure quality control. I have tried to stay away from some of the most common allergens (gluten intolerance runs in my husband’s family, so I am very mindful of that especially). I also don’t use any fillers such as cornstarch (which can clog pores, and don’t even get me started about GMOs!) or Bismuth Oxychloride (it doesn’t photograph well, it’s shiny, and makes many people breakout). Another HUGE factor is price! Because I do the formulating, manufacturing and packaging myself, I can keep my expenses down, which in turn lets me keep my prices at an affordable level. Perhaps most importantly, I have a face; I am not a big company with fancy machines. I am a stay at home mom with a home office/lab. And, I wear my own products!

P&P: What propelled you to start selling your products?
JA: My husband! He and I have never really fit the 9 to 5 mold, but we weren’t sure how to survive without a “normal” job. However, my formula rivaled and out-performed some of the leading mineral makeup lines and my husband saw how it was helping my skin. He said, “You really need to start your own makeup line!” It has been five years (and 2 more babies) since then, but we are finally making it happen.

Purely You Minerals Berry Red lip gloss - Poor & Pretty

P&P: Wow, three kids! How do you balance being a mom with running a home-based business?
JA: I have no idea! Haha! Most of the time, my sink is full of dishes and I’m tripping over shoes and toys. I try to work mostly during naps and at night, but some weeks are busier then others. Family will always be my priority, but I am doing what I love so I am blessed! I am definitely not superwoman; I have help. My husband is a fantastic father and super supportive. My best friend, Melody Spencer is my Marketing Manager and Social Media Coordinator. My brother, David Arnold also owns his own business called Code Luna. He does computer nerd stuff, so he built my website.

Purely You Minerals foundation 2 - Poor & Pretty

P&P: Okay, let’s talk tips. Finding the right shade of foundation is hard! Can you help?
JA: Absolutely! Order my free samples! The best thing you can do is try and identify your undertone (warm, cool, neutral). I have cool undertones, but I get quite red in the face so I prefer to counteract that by using neutral colored foundation. If you still have a hard time getting the shade just right, I can formulate something just for you.

P&P: What are a few essential skincare tips we should always observe?
JA: Get good sleep. Drink lots of water. EXFOLIATE! I swear by One Minute Wonder gel exfoliator by Max International. Good skincare is essential to good makeup application.

Purely You Minerals blushing lip gloss - Poor & Pretty

P&P: The Purely You Minerals lineup currently includes foundation, bronzer, blush, eyeshadow, and lip gloss. Any new products on the horizon?
JA: We will be launching our all-natural pressed eyeshadows and blushes in the very near future. It will be a build-your-own pallet sort of thing where you can purchase refills and not have to purchase a new pallet each time. Also in the works is pressed foundation, nail polish, and all-natural mascara!

Want to try out Purely You Minerals for yourself? Joy is giving away one of her products to a lucky Poor & Pretty reader. Just “like” Purely You Minerals on Facebook, pick out your single favorite Purely You product from their online shop {choose from foundation, silk veil, blush, loose eyeshadow or lip gloss} and tell us what it is in the comments below. Hurry, though! The contest ends Sunday, February 10th at 10:00 pm EST.

Friday Faves 2.1.13: Valentine’s Day

Poor & Pretty Friday Faves Valentine 2-1-13

Are you ready for Valentine’s Day? I, for one, love an excuse to get all gussied up! Plus, I can’t wait to wear my new tights! Here’s what I’ve got planned for Valentining.

1. Timex Weekender™ Slip Thru watch in pink/gray. This is one of my favorite watches because you can so easily swap out the straps to match your outfit. Remember this outfit? I wore the strap from this watch with a multicolored dial. What’s not to love?

2. LUSH Heavanilli Massage Bar. I’m not surprised LUSH named this “Heavanilli” because it smells absolutely divine. The combination of Shea and cocoa butters will make your skin fall in love, too. I hope Stan & I can make time for massages! ♥

3. Pink Tulip mineral eyeshadow by Madison Street Beauty. Pink Tulip makes for fun, dramatic eye décor. I’m going to blend it in with other eyeshadow colors and also wet it and use it as eyeliner. I love that it’s all-natural, vegan, and chemical-free.

4. Blushing lip gloss by Purely You Minerals. Introducing my new favorite lip gloss! Purely You Minerals leaves all of the nasty chemicals out of their products and uses only ingredients that are beneficial to your skin. Their lip gloss contains Vitamin E, olive fruit oil, and Rosehip seed oil, which is high in Vitamins A & C. I’ve been using “Blushing” daily, so I know I’ll use it on Valentine’s Day!

5. Gipsy Sheer Heart Tights from ASOS. I originally bought these from ModCloth {they were called “Achilles’ Zeal”}, but they’re no longer available from ModCloth. Happily, I found the exact same ones from ASOS so you can have them in time for Valentine’s Day too! I don’t think I have to explain why they’re perfect. ;)
