I’ve gotten to the point where everything I use on my face on a daily basis is handmade by me, which is pretty exciting. I’m often asked about my skincare routine — what products I use, how often I exfoliate, etc. So today, I’m sharing my 100% natural skincare routine with you!

On a daily basis, I…

1. Cleanse: Twice a Day. Every morning and evening, I wash my face with my all-natural homemade face wash. Our skin is constantly attracting dirt, excreting waste, and shedding dead skin cells, so it’s important to keep up with it by cleansing twice a day, especially if you wear makeup. If you don’t wash your makeup off in the evening, it will clog your pores and result in acne. My mild facial cleanser is made with castile soap, jojoba oil, rosewater, and lavender essential oil (I’ve also begun to add a few drops of tea tree oil to it). It contains no harsh surfactants, so it doesn’t strip away my skin’s natural oils. Instead, the jojoba oil and castile soap combine to gently remove dirt without drying out my face. 

2. Tone: After Washing. Immediately after I wash my face, I follow up with my Rose + Tea Facial Toner. Many people skip toners and astringents and go straight to moisturizing, but this is a crucial step in my skincare routine. Using a toner clears up any dirt left behind by my cleanser, restores my skin’s natural pH level, tightens my pores, and hydrates.

3. Moisturize: After Toner. Once the toner dries on my skin, I follow up with either my homemade body & facial oil or homemade shea butter facial cream. Recipes for both of these will be in my natural beauty eBook! Sign up for my emails to be notified when it launches.

On a weekly basis, I…

4. Exfoliate: Once a Week. To get rid of dry skin cells, I’ll use one of my salt or sugar scrubs — I’m really digging my Vanilla Sugar Scrub right now — or if I need something gentler, I go with my oat & cornmeal facial scrub. I exfoliate once a week — any more than that would be too harsh on my skin.

5. Mask: Once or Twice Week. Depending on my skin’s needs, I use one of my clay face masks 1-2x a week. If it needs an extra dose of vitamins, I use my Chocolate or Rose Facial Masks. If it’s on the oily side or I have a few blackheads, I take care of ‘em with my Charcoal Facial Mask. Or if I have an extra avocado laying around, I whip up my Avocado Hair & Face Mask.

It’s getting warmer, so my cooking is getting lazier. There’s just no sense standing over a hot stove for 30-60 minutes when it’s 80 degrees outside! Stan and I love salads, but if we’re having them as our main course for dinner, they’ve got to be filling. So I hunted around the Interwebs and found 22 of the most delicious filling summery salads out there. I can’t wait to start buying locally-grown fruits & veggies to put in them!

1. Salad Sicilia via Delicious Days. In the mix: Radicchio, chicory, arugula, fennel, apple, radishes, carrots, oranges, almonds, and pistachios.

2. Kale Salad with Avocado Tahini Sauce via Love & Lemons. In the mix: kale, tahini, avocado, brussels sprouts, radishes, carrots, white bans, almonds, basil.

3. Seven-Layer Avocado Salad in a Mason Jar via California Avocado. Mason jar salads – what a cool idea! In the mix: avocados, cucumbers, red cabbage, edamame, bell peppers, artichoke hearts, tomatoes, and basil.

4. Honey Walnut Power Salad via Pinch of Yum. In the mix: walnuts, baby spinach, onion, red grapes, edamame, bulgur, honey, bleu cheese.

5. Grilled Peach, Chicken & Arugula Salad via BS in the Kitchen. In the mix: chicken, peaches, arugula, prosciutto, goat cheese, walnuts.

DIY Beauty: Avocado Hair & Face Mask

If you follow me on Facebook or Instagram, you probably saw my “Hulking out” photo (if you missed it; I’ve included it below ;). Really though, I was just wearing this avocado hair and face mask. It’s rich in protein, vitamins (especially A), and antioxidants to gently exfoliate and moisturize your skin and hydrate your hair. Plus, apple cider vinegar is great at eliminating build-up and dry skin that leads to dandruff. Okay, okay, I get it. It’s awesome. Now, tell me how to make it!

Super Smooth Avocado Hair & Face Mask. This should make enough for one hair and face application, even if you have the thickest hair in the world (like me). It will not store well, so use it as soon as you make it.

Ingredients:

  • ½ an avocado — rich in antioxidants and vitamins to promote hair growth, overall scalp health, hydrates and gently exfoliates skin and helps prevent wrinkles.
  • 1 egg yolk — don’t use the egg white! It’s a royal pain to get out of your hair. Egg yolk is also rich in protein, fat, and lecithin (an antioxidant) and acts as a hair conditioner.
  • ¼ cup organic soy milk —chock full of protein, vitamin E, and antioxidants, soy milk encourages cell turnover for healthy skin. Only use organic soy milk, you don’t want GMOs on your face!
  • 1 tbs extra virgin olive oil — high in fat, oleic acid, and antioxidants to heal skin cells,  repair skin damage, and prevent wrinkles.
  • 1 tsp apple cider vinegar — prevents scalp buildup and dandruff.

Step One: Combine everything but the avocado in a small bowl.

Step Two: Whisk the ingredients together and voilà! You have just made runny mayonnaise! Ew. Please don’t eat this.

Step Three: Add the liquid mixture and the avocado into a blender and blend away. Stop two or three times to check for avocado chunks.

Step Four: Apply mask to hair. If you’ve ever used a home hair dye kit, you’ll want to apply this mixture to your hair in the same way. Separate out your hair, then work in the mixture with your hands (and maybe a comb, but I did just fine without one), working from your scalp out to your ends. When you’ve covered your entire head, spend a little extra time working it into your scalp. Pull your hair back with a hair elastic or claw and cover it with a shower cap. You’re going to leave this on for about 45 minutes.

Step Five: Apply mask to face. After you wash your hands and face (use your regular facial cleanser), use the remainder of the mask on your face. Apply in gentle upward strokes, avoiding the eye area. Leave this on for about 5 minutes, then rinse off with lukewarm water and follow up with your favorite astringent and moisturizer. Step Six: After 45 minutes, hop in the shower and thoroughly rinse the avocado mask out of your hair. Follow up with your normal shampoo and conditioner routine.
