DIY Trouble Maker Shirt

Remember when Mish posted about Audrey Kitching’s new clothing line, Coco de Coeur? Well, I think Audrey’s great; I love her hair and DIY fashion style, but I can’t afford her clothing {poor and pretty, remember?}, so I decided to take a page from her book and make my own shirt inspired by one from the Coco de Coeur line {first two images below courtesy of Coco de Coeur}:

I picked the trouble maker shirt because it’s a simple design and it almost looks like the letters are made from pieces of tape. The Coco de Coeur shirt sells for $35, but you can make your own for under $10. Here’s what you’ll need:

plain white cotton shirt {white is the best, but you can use another very light color if you’d like}
permanent fabric marker {use a brand new one or it may run out as mine did, but hey, this is DIY!}
transparent tape {like Scotch tape}
ruler
pencil
a piece of cardboard or the lid of a box small enough to fit inside the shirt {see first image below}
scissors

I happened to have this white burnout v-neck lying around {covered in baby blue blotches after Stan washed it with the dark laundry}, but you can buy plain t-shirts at your local craft store for typically less than $10 each. Or, if you plan on making a few {or if you just really like plain shirts}, you can buy them in bulk online through wholesalers like Got Apparel, Blank Shirts, Blank Style, etc. You’ll find permanent fabric markers at craft stores, too.

Got all of your supplies? Okay! Here’s what to do:

1. Place the cardboard or the box lid inside your shirt. This is so that you have a flat surface to draw your letters on and it will also prevent “bleeding” of your marker onto the back of the shirt or the table you’re working on.

2. Cut pieces of transparent tape to form “stick letters” {for lack of a better term!}

3. Use a ruler and pencil to draw a very light straight line across your shirt. You’ll place the pieces of tape to form the letters of “trouble” on this line to ensure they’re even. Form your letters on the line, then erase it. {I made the first image really dark here so you can see the translucent letters easier… and the blotches of blue}.

4. Trace around the pieces of tape with your chosen fabric marker to form the outline of your letters.

5. After you finish the outlines for “trouble,” use your ruler and pencil to draw a line for “maker,” then reuse the pieces of tape from “trouble” to form the letters of “maker”.

6. Repeat step #4 for “maker”.

7. Color in the letters, wear, and take some great punk-rock, wasted youth photos. <3

BUST Spring Craftacular

We had so much fun at the BUST Spring Craftacular yesterday. It was amazing how much talent was oozing out of The Warsaw in Brooklyn! We’ve never been in a room with so much talent before… it was so inspiring. There were vendors selling jewelry, makeup, handmade soaps, crocheted critters, clothing, stationery, posters, and so much more. We didn’t take too many photos {we were so busy shopping and chatting!}, but we grabbed images from the websites of our favorite vendors to share with you here.

I don’t know how we didn’t go really broke buying everything from New York Couture. We were obsessed with all of their handmade garments and flashy accessories, especially the birthday cake dress, cupcake shirt, and panda dress {worn by Audrey Kitching!}. We decided we need to sign up for sewing classes — anyone have any recommendations?

Verameat was another great discovery. She seemed to be as obsessed with vampires as we are, and we swooned over her vampire teeth necklaces and rings, like the one shown above that Mish bought. Plus, Vera was a total sweetheart.

We were really excited to finally meet Luca, the mastermind behind Lollibomb Beauty. Even with her glasses on, she exudes what Weezer would call raditude. Luca gave us great advice about making your own cosmetics and how to use packaging to really stand out. With her neon cheetah patterned bags and pink Chinese takeout boxes, she should know! We also loved her strawberry margherita lip balm and cupcake bath soap — yum! We wish we could have grabbed drinks with her after, but we were all wiped out. Next time, Luca!

Pinecone + Chickadee was Stan’s favorite vendor. Even though none of us have babies, he wanted the blue owl onesie “for the future.” Their simplistic approach yields many adorable items of clothing for adults, kids, and babies, plus supercute tote bags and nifty cards.

Audrey Kitching’s new collection of tees for her line, Coco De Coeur, is out and is pretty badass. I love that they’re oversized and burnout! I also love that they look handmade. My favorite is the Punk Rock Ruined Me Slouch Neck. You can check them out at www.cocodecoeur.com. I can’t wait to get mine!

Pink is the New Blonde

I think pink hair is beautiful!!! (If you pull it off right.) So is this an everyday color? No, I guess it isn’t. Who can pull this off? Only high school students, hairdressers, rock stars? I’ve seen it done super well, and I’ve seen it done super bad. Audrey Kitching and Gwen Stefani both pulled it off…I wonder if I can. This may be my next hair venture…whatcha think???

Audrey Kitching: One Mean Scene Queen

Hair stylist.makeup artist.model.designer, she’s stylish, original and completely self-made; Audrey Kitching does it all. She rocks self made outfits highlighted with bright colors, sequins, feathers, obnoxious bows and rhinestones. She thrifts along the streets of LA, unearthing hot vintage items. Her very unique style can be extreme and tacky (in a good way) but she isn’t afraid to show it. If Hello Kitty was a real person, her name would be Audrey Kitching.

Audrey’s huge mass of pink hair has come to be her trademark. Consisting of a variety of extensions, colors and accessories, her hair has become the envy of scene girls everywhere. I admit, I freakin’ love it too! Being a makeup artist myself, I appreciate her daringness to test the boundaries of everyday makeup. Audrey is the next pop culture icon to watch out for…so LOOK OUT, this girl is hot!
