Pink is the New Blonde

 - by Mish

AudreyKitching16

I think pink hair is beautiful!!!  (If you pull it off right.)  So is this an everyday color?  No, I guess it isn’t.  Who can pull this off?  Only high school students, hairdressers, rock stars?  I’ve seen it done super well, and I’ve seen it done super bad.  Audrey Kitching and Gwen Stefani both pulled it off…I wonder if I can.  This may be my next hair venture…whatcha think???

DIY: Get “Beachy” Hair

 - by Mish

My new obsession is natural beach-like hair.  I’m talking rolled out of bed, crazy, messy waves.  I love it.  I’ve been rockin’ my hair like this for a few weeks now and thought I’d show you guys how it’s done.  There are two ways:  The lazy way, and the blow dry way.  I’m liking the Tigi’s Love, Peace and The Planet, Totally Beachin’ Body and Waves Styling Mist, (Phew that was a mouthful).  Here’s a quick vid on how to achieve this look, beaches.

The song is “California” by Metro Station…

Would you try this?

DIY: Hair Bows!

 - by Sami

As a continuation of my diy hair accessories post, here’s a quick & easy tutorial on how to make hair bows!

bows-tools

You can find everything at your local craft store. I got all of this for under $20 at AC Moore.

Steps:

Before we get started, make sure you lay down a few sheets of newspaper on your workspace. You do not want to get superglue all over your table or desk.

Also, when making your bow, you’ll want to think about how big you want it to be. I like mine between 3-5 inches long. So, when you cut the 1 inch wide ribbon, cut a piece twice the size you want your bow to be. So, I’ll cut my ribbon between 6-10 inches long.

steps1-2

Once you have your piece of ribbon,  glue one end on top of the other end so your ribbon forms a loop. Let it dry for a few seconds.

Using your glued ends as the back center of your ribbon, pinch the center of the bow together like I’m doing above. This is going to be the center of your bow, where you will place the smaller, 1/2 inch wide ribbon.

steps3-4

Now, cut a piece of the 1/2 inch wide ribbon {you won’t need more than 2 or 3 inches} and glue one end to the center of your bow.

Wrap it around once or twice and glue it to the back of your bow. Depending on how long you cut your piece, you may need to cut a little off so that it ends at the back of your bow. Let it dry.

steps5-6

Slip a bobby pin through the 1/2 inch wide ribbon on the back of your bow. If you’d like, you can sew a button on to the front or glue on some fake gems, too. And there you have it, a hair bow! Wear it yourself or give it to a friend, daughter, or your adorable niece. :)

The great thing about these bows is that they don’t have to be hair bows. You can simply take out the bobby pin and slip them onto a chain to wear them as a necklace! <3

Go forth and make some super cute bows! {Send us pics if you do!}

DIY: Hair Accessories

 - by Sami

As a part of my personal campaign to make as much of my own stuff as I can, I decided to explore the realm of hair accessories. Currently, my hair is pretty short so I can really only style it three ways; straight, curly, or in pigtails. Sometimes, I get bored with these styles and I look for ways to spice them up a bit. I’ve bought cute clips and headbands in the past, and they never seem to be too difficult to put together, so I thought I’d try making my own. Turns out, they’re really simple and cheap to make. The markup on these things is ridiculous. You’ll never buy them again!

Here’s what you’ll need for decorating headbands:

  • plain fabric headbands {I found mine at a dollar store – 3 headbands for $1!}
  • fake fabric flowers {you can find these at your local craft store, I also used fake flowers from a lei}
  • buttons {you can get a whole bag of random buttons for cheap at a craft store}
  • super glue or a hot glue gun

here’s what you’ll need/can use for decorating bobby pins/hair clips:

  • bobby pins {you can get these at any hair supply store or even Walmart or Target}
  • plain, metal hair clips {hair supply store}
  • fake round gems {craft store}
  • buttons
  • felt
  • needle and thread

The steps for both are pretty similar:

  1. lay down some newspaper or paper towels on your work surface so you don’t get glue all over your desk/table.
  2. glue your gems, buttons, or fake flowers onto your bobby pins, hair clip, or head band.
  3. press down on the gem, button, or flower so that it adheres well to the object you’re gluing it to.
  4. let sit to dry for 24 hours for best results {i.e., don’t wear them right away, even though they’re super cute!}

You’ll notice I’ve also made hair clips with felt shapes. Those require a bit more effort and supplies, so I’ll cover those in an upcoming post {soon, I promise!}.

Did you make hair accessories using this how-to guide? E-mail us pics and we’ll include them in a future post! Happy crafting!

Hot Mess: Spring Hair on the Runway.

 - by Mish

I’ve been looking at industry magazines, videos and all sorts of media on this subject and have come to  a conclusion: messy hair is in this season!!!  Natural, disheveled, organic, romantic, untidy hair!!!  So many designers are showing these styles on the runway this season and it’s absolutely beautiful.

above (Organic by John Patrick) Fluffed up and loosely pinned up…kind of an old school Elain Benes huh?

Then there’s the Marc by Marc Jacobs style  (below) with the big head wrap bow…they leave the fuzzy teased bang out.

This is Chloe…this style is simple and natural and undone.  For this i would use anti frizz or humidity products, finger dry and use a curling iron by wrapping  pieces around the barrel.  You want a very loose wave (not a curl.)

These styles are real life and can be worn on a daily basis.  I LOVE them.  We’re so used to sleek, polished hair that we try so hard to achieve those looks.  I think it’s amazing that we’re pulling away from that a little.  There’s still thought to these looks and effort, but I’m into the fact that you don’t have to try and be perfect with these styles.  If a mistake happens it’s likely to work with the messy look. What do you think?  Would you try these out? Let us know!!
