I just bought these wonderfully bright & spring-y tights from We Love Colors {Remember Stan’s sister’s guest post about them?}. During our styling session, Sabrina and I talked about creative ways to add color to my outfits and bright tights were one solution. Going by the first photo above, from left to right, I have Amethyst, Yellow, White, and Orchid Pink. See them in action below:

Sabrina Allard has been inspiring me from afar for a while now. I briefly mentioned my collaboration with her in my previous post, but I also took part in her ReStyle Challenge last month.
I don’t consider myself to have a mainstream fashion sense — I’m not particularly interested in brand-names and I can’t afford high-end fashion like Gucci and Prada {though I would love to fill my closet with clothing from Betsey Johnson and kate spade}. I keep up with some current trends like skinny jeans and cute flats, but mostly because they are comfortable and make me feel me. But, what really makes my style is color, and lots of it.
I reached out to Sabrina because I was having trouble reconciling my fun and cutesy clothing that I like to wear to school and on the weekends with my “professional” work-appropriate attire. We don’t have a strict dress code at work — we often wear nice jeans and nice t-shirts — but I felt like my “big girl work outfits” are boring and monochromatic. Being on a tight budget, I also wanted to know how to make more out of what I already own. So, I called in the expert.

Okay, I admit it, I mostly just wanted to hang out with Sabrina. She has this inspiring, non-stop, up-beat attitude towards life that I really admire. She came over my house on a Saturday morning and I treated her to chocolate-chocolate pancakes {recipe coming soon} before we hit my closet. Just having Sabrina peruse my closet was beneficial. She threw pieces together that I would have never thought of pairing, assuring me that I already have “a closet full of great clothes.”
After rifling through my closet, we took a trip to the mall, where I tried on lots of clothes, but only came back with a skirt, a casual dress, and a few accessories because Sabrina taught me to be really critical of what I buy. Here are a few of her tips:
- Never buy anything unless you 100% love it. I found a few skirts and shirts that I liked, except I wasn’t a huge fan of the length of the skirt or the embellishments on the shirt, etc. Even so, I probably would have bought them and “dealt with” the little things I didn’t like. Sabrina didn’t let me make that mistake. “You’ll buy it, then you’ll obsess about what you don’t like about it, and it will sit in your closet collecting dust.”
- Never buy anything unless it’s a perfect fit {unless you can tailor it}. I’m a big fan of flirty, flowy short skirts. Unfortunately {well, I consider it fortunate}, I have a nice little booty. So, because I have a tiny figure, when I put on a flowy skirt, my butt sort of pops out and it ends up looking a little funny rather than cute. Still, I love having cute skirts in my wardrobe and I would have bought more, but Sabrina reminded me that I would obsess over the way my butt pops and never wear the skirts. I also found this gorgeous 60s-style polka dot dress at Delia’s and it fit perfectly except the torso was a little long. If Sabrina hadn’t been there, I would have spent $40 on the dress and probably never worn it because it would always look a little strange in the torso-region.
- Never Sacrifice Your Personal Style. Yes, pinstripe pants and pencil skirts are great for the office, but are they you? How can you make them look you? {See next tip!} Find basics that you’ll wear without giving up your identity.
- Accessorize! In my ReStyle Challenge post, I tried to add colorful shoes, scarves, and necklaces to my boring, monochrome clothing in order to make my outfits more interesting. Sabrina stressed the importance of accessorizing, especially for me. “We need color in our outfits to feel right,” she told me. “Especially you. Bright colors are signature Sami, and you need to stick with that even when you’re wearing all black.” Sometimes, cute pink shoes are all you need to brighten your day.

Possibly my favorite part of our whole collaboration was the photoshoot we did with my friend Mayya Medved. We had so much fun! I can’t wait to work with them more! Check out more of the pics after the jump!

I’ve been working with Sabrina Allard of Pinky’s Pen — a fabulous writer/personal stylist & totally fun to be around — and we partnered up with Mayya Medved {who does the photography for my cupcake soaps} and did a mini photoshoot today at UConn. I’ll be writing a bigger post about that — and my & Sabrina’s styling session — soon, but I wanted to share with you the outfit I wore today:

Shoes: Plato’s Closet, $6, originally from Forever 21. Skinny Jeans: Amethyst Jeans, Bob’s, $25. Floral tank top: Target, $8. Cardigan: Plato’s Closet {can’t remember how much it was… I think around $12-15}. Necklace: handmade by yours truly. Sunglasses: Fred Flare, $11. Apparently the economy hit Fred Flare hard, as they are now $12!
I think I look like a creeper in that first photo, peeking through the clothing rack, but Mayya apparently loves it so much she wants to steal my identity and use it as her Facebook photo {I swear! She said so herself!} <3. I’m also majorly in love with the new coat I bought from ModCloth:

It’s the Yellow-So-Cute Coat and it’s on sale for only $24!!! It’s originally $80! I couldn’t pass that up — or, as Stan loves to say “you couldn’t afford not to buy it!” I love how bright and sun-shiny it is and the floral lining inside is beautiful.
Today was a really good day. :)

I love that accessible {read: affordable} fashion brands are finally getting on board with the sustainability movement. H&M just finished developing the Conscious Collection, a line of clothing for men, women & children made exclusively from sustainable materials such as organic cotton & linen and recycled polyester. The women’s apparel is gorgeous, romantic & bohemian. Here’s a sampling:

Sabrina Allard over at Pinky’s Pen recently challenged her readers to “pull some cobwebs off the clothes we ignore in our closets and find new and clever ways to wear them.” During her 10-day ReStyle Challenge, Sabrina encouraged women to really re-assess their wardrobe and ask the question: which clothing/styles really make me feel like me?
I decided to take up Sabrina’s challenge and examine my closet. Upon doing so, I noticed that a majority of it was black, gray, or white, especially my “big girl clothes” that I wear to work or important events. Kind of boring, right? So, rather than chucking all of these nice but lackluster clothes, I found ways to make them more interesting: I added a little color. Here are four of my re-styled outfits:
This one was my favorite. As you can probably tell, I love my red shoes. Many of us on a limited budget don’t always consider buying colorful shoes because they don’t go with everything, but they are a fun way to colorize an otherwise color-less outfit. I love the idea of wearing a scarf or sash around the waist, too. I totally took that fashion tip from my boss, who has been known to wear colorful ties through her belt loops.

I love this top and the skinny pants because they’re both form-fitting and comfortable at the same time, but wearing them together does make me look monochromatic, so I wore a cute pink and black striped scarf {which I bought at Peonies for super cheap} as a belt, threw on a pink necklace and paired the outfit with my pink Ann Taylor bag {also from Peonies}. Plus, I painted my toes pink :)

This outfit is of course suited to a more casual environment, but I wanted to include it anyway, mostly because I really like the shade of blue in this shirt. Oh, regarding that first picture… Stan said the lighting was “uneven,” so I tried to help him out.

Oh, natural lighting, how I’ve missed you. Here is yet another almost-fully-black outfit, but I spiced it up with bright pink tights, my pink necklace, and very pink lipstick and eyeshadow.
Thank you, Sabrina, for continuing to inspire. xo
