Celebrity inspired fashion: Sookie Stackhouse's lemonade dress

You might have noticed that I’ve been really inspired by fashion I’ve seen on TV {see my posts on Degrassi and Pushing Daisies}. Anna Paquin was wearing this dress as Sookie Stackhouse on True Blood a few episodes ago and I was going to wait and do a Wardrobe Envy post on her, until I saw a very similar dress on ModCloth:

So cute! The Lemonade on the Lawn dress is on sale for $40! Get it!!

Happy Friday! <3

Quotable: "The past is like an anchor..."

This quote is so unbelievably relevant to my life right now, I had to blog it. I found this beautiful print, designed by dear colleen, on Pinterest. You can buy it here. The quote is from “Anchors Away,” the 67th episode of Sex and the City. That show had some really amazing lines.

Priti NYC for non-toxic nails

I’ve been on the prowl for non-toxic nail polish for some time, but unfortunately, they average around $10 a bottle and up. Luckily, ideeli had a deal last week: $25 for $50 at Priti NYC. So, I nabbed three different colors of their “3 free” {made without toluene, dibutyl phthalate (DHB) and formaldehyde} polishes and a bottle of their Soy Polish Remover.

The three polishes, from left to right are: Blue Wedgewood, Silver Flare Peony, and Gatsby Dahlia, all part of the Summer 2011 collection.

Naturally, the first one I decided to use was the pink one! You’ll notice the polish has a matted finish, which is fine because shine is not a big deal to me. If you prefer some shine, they have a line of top coats. When I was touching up my nails after painting them, I only had to use a tiny bit of the Soy Polish Remover {which smells amazing, by the way}. I dipped one side of a cotton swab in only one time.

Still lookin’ good after doing some dishes… is anyone else creeped out by hand photos? This totally weirds me out.

Wardrobe Envy: Lucy Fernandez

I’ve been obsessing over Degrassi Junior High and Degrassi High, the late 80s/early 90s series that gave birth to {literally} Degrassi: The Next Generation {I watched that, too, until all the characters changed}. I could go on and on about how Degrassi has always been the most intelligent, informative and all-around amazing young adult television show, but I promise I won’t. Let’s just say, when I have kids, they’re definitely watching it.

Anyway, I’ve always loved 80s fashion — okay, some 80s fashion. It just seems so bright and fun, two adjectives I try to incorporate into my daily outfits. Lucy Fernandez {played by Anais Granofsky} has an especially great wardrobe. Including the one shown in the photo above, here are a few of my favorite outfits:

Sorry about the image quality — they didn’t have 1080p in the 80s!

I love how she’s always wearing a head scarf too. So cute!

Okay, off to work now. Enjoy your Wednesday!

Vegan cupcakes take over my tummy

Mish and I have been dying to try out recipes from Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World by Isa Chandra Moskowitz and Terry Hope Romero for a very long time, and we finally did on Friday. Because neither of us had ever made vegan cupcakes before, and Mish has never made cupcakes from scratch, we decided to go with a simpler recipe: Simple Vanilla and Agave Nectar Cupcakes. For the frosting, we made a Chocolate Ganache using the recipe from the book and adding a little bit of our own invention. Here’s the result:

These were the most moist cupcakes I’ve ever had! I’m guessing that’s a result of using agave syrup in lieu of sugar and eggs/milk. I mean… wow. I’m not vegan {though I may be slowly heading that way, if it weren’t for bacon…}, but I have a feeling I’ll be making many more vegan cupcakes.

Psst: check out author Isa Chandra Moskowitz’s website, The Post Punk Kitchen, for more unbelievably delicious vegan recipes. :)
