This Weekend: Judy Dworin’s “In This House”

Judy Dworin, Founder of the non-profit Judy Dworin Performance Project, consistently opens my eyes with her mixed-media performances, giving voices to those who are often kept silent. Judy’s latest production, “In This House,” starts tomorrow at the Charter Oak Cultural Center in Hartford. Centered around the Joshua Hempsted House in New London, ”In This House” studies race relations in Connecticut from the 18th century until today.

Tickets are $10 for students, $15 for seniors, and $25 for general admission. I’ll be there Saturday! Read more about “In This House” here, and check out the interview with Judy Dworin and Leslie Bird, Composer and Musical Director, of Women of the Cross, on NPR. Friday Faves 4.1.11

1. Rimmel Moisture Renew Lipstick in Red Alert — the website “smudge” image of this lipstick does not do it justice. It is the perfect red lipstick, hands down. Besides beautiful color, it’s also SPF 18 and contains Hylaronic Acid, Collagen and Vitamins A, C and E to make your puckers smooth and kissable!

2. MAC Frost Lipstick in Pink Burst — found this at one of the makeup outlets in Clinton Crossings. It doesn’t look like it’s carried in regular stores anymore. It’s a pretty vibrant/shiny pink.

3. Physicians Formula Eye Booster 2-in-1 Lash Boosting Eyeliner + Serum in Deep Brown & Ultra Black — wow, that’s a long name, huh? I’ve been searching high and low for an affordable, paraben-free liquid eyeliner. These are perfect!

4. Tinted Face Moisturizer for Light Skin by Green Beauty Cosmetics — remember my Etsy Spotlight on Mati Fuller/Green Beauty Cosmetics last summer? Well, I’ve been using the tinted moisturizer sample I got from her and, I’ve gotta say, I like it better than the MAC one I featured here. It’s a very light {as in weight} moisturizer and it makes my skin look healthier and gives it a nice glow. Most of the time, I don’t even put anything on over it.

H&M Conscious Collection arrives in April

I love that accessible {read: affordable} fashion brands are finally getting on board with the sustainability movement. H&M just finished developing the Conscious Collection, a line of clothing for men, women & children made exclusively from sustainable materials such as organic cotton & linen and recycled polyester. The women’s apparel is gorgeous, romantic & bohemian. Here’s a sampling:

ReStyle Challenge: Add a little color

Sabrina Allard over at Pinky’s Pen recently challenged her readers to “pull some cobwebs off the clothes we ignore in our closets and find new and clever ways to wear them.” During her 10-day ReStyle Challenge, Sabrina encouraged women to really re-assess their wardrobe and ask the question: which clothing/styles really make me feel like me?

I decided to take up Sabrina’s challenge and examine my closet. Upon doing so, I noticed that a majority of it was black, gray, or white, especially my “big girl clothes” that I wear to work or important events. Kind of boring, right? So, rather than chucking all of these nice but lackluster clothes, I found ways to make them more interesting: I added a little color. Here are four of my re-styled outfits:

This one was my favorite. As you can probably tell, I love my red shoes. Many of us on a limited budget don’t always consider buying colorful shoes because they don’t go with everything, but they are a fun way to colorize an otherwise color-less outfit. I love the idea of wearing a scarf or sash around the waist, too. I totally took that fashion tip from my boss, who has been known to wear colorful ties through her belt loops.

I love this top and the skinny pants because they’re both form-fitting and comfortable at the same time, but wearing them together does make me look monochromatic, so I wore a cute pink and black striped scarf {which I bought at Peonies for super cheap} as a belt, threw on a pink necklace and paired the outfit with my pink Ann Taylor bag {also from Peonies}. Plus, I painted my toes pink :)

This outfit is of course suited to a more casual environment, but I wanted to include it anyway, mostly because I really like the shade of blue in this shirt. Oh, regarding that first picture… Stan said the lighting was “uneven,” so I tried to help him out.

Oh, natural lighting, how I’ve missed you. Here is yet another almost-fully-black outfit, but I spiced it up with bright pink tights, my pink necklace, and very pink lipstick and eyeshadow.

Thank you, Sabrina, for continuing to inspire. xo
