Conference, cupcakes, and Gatsby: My little trip to Austin

I’ve been in Austin, TX since Monday for the BazaarVoice Summit {if you follow me on Facebook or Instagram, you’ll have seen the photos!}. Even though I miss home, I’m sad to head back to the east coast today. I’ve met some great innovators and inspiring people, partied a bit, and oh yeah, the weather is much, much better here — it was 90º when we got off the plane! Here are some of the highlights from my trip:

Bazaarvoice summit Hilton Austin

The Bazaarvoice Summit — the main reason I was in Austin! I was so happy to accompany my boss to my first-ever Bazaarvoice Summit {and my first-ever conference} — all about the future of brands using digital and social media to engage with their customers. I’m excited to bring my learnings back to work, and even to my blog and small business.

Bazaarvoice - Great Gatsby party

Then, of course, there was the Great Gatsby party at The Belmont Tuesday night.

Bazaarvoice - Great Gatsby dress

Bazaarvoice’s website and app gave very little detail about the party, but I saw the words “Great Gatsby,” and immediately packed the costume from my 1920′s murder mystery party. I was part of the very small minority who got totally decked out, so I drew a lot of compliments.

Great Gatsby phonograph DJ

I was pretty impressed with the DJ spinning records on phonographs.

Sugar Mamas cupcakes Austin

After some Internet research and a brief poll of the locales, I selected Sugar Mama’s Bakeshop as the single cupcake bakery to visit while I was in Austin. They totally lived up to their reputation! It’s a little bakery with a punk rock vibe and — most importantly — delicious cupcakes. For flavors, I chose {clockwise from top left} the Pinup, Strawberry Love, Steve’s Special {think Guinness + chocolate}, and the Odd Couple. I’m a sucker for the sweet/salty mix so my favorite was the Odd Couple — a Valrhona chocolate cupcake with swirled housemade salted caramel and vanilla cream cheese frosting, topped with a chocolate covered pretzel and drizzled with even more caramel! Your mouth is watering, right?

Goodbye, Austin! Hope to see you again soon!  ♥
