In the summer of 2009 — just a few months before the Poor & Pretty blog began — I had the most amazing cupcakes I’ve ever eaten in my life. They were from Cupcake Charlie’s in the Mashpee Commons on Cape Cod.

Since then, I’ve been obsessed with taste-testing cupcakes everywhere I go. If you’ve been a long-time reader, you’ll know that I’ve eaten a lot of cupcakes from a lot of bakeries! And it all started at Cupcake Charlie’s.

Now, every time I’m in the Cape, I try to taste test a different flavor. Luckily, I have family who live pretty close to the Mashpee Commons, so I have a lot of reasons to visit. This past weekend was my cousin Kelli’s baby shower, so guess where we stopped on the way home?

Somehow, I hadn’t yet tried their Red Velvet {it’s usually a good standard to hold bakeries to}, so I took a Rockin’ Red Velvet and a Lemon Drop for the road.

I had a few bites of the Lemon Drop in the car, but because of its lemon pastry filling, it gets a little messy. As I’ve come to expect from Cupcake Charlie’s, it was deliciously moist and flavorful with a sweet lemony buttercream frosting. They do overload the frosting a bit, so I tend to take some of it off.

I ate the Rockin’ Red Velvet with some rosé wine while I re-watched How I Met Your Mother episodes {I know, classy, right?}. I can’t even describe how awesome it was. Exactly the right amount of cocoa flavor with an insanely delicious cream cheese frosting. And I love the little edible confetti on top!
It’s really no wonder they’ve received awards for best bakery and have been featured in wedding magazines and on Food Network’s Cupcake Wars. So next time you visit the Cape, stop by Cupcake Charlie’s! They’ve also got bakeries in Plymouth and Newport.

My kids and I have been on a cupcake quest ourselves and had the 2011 Great Cupcake Tour where we visited 17 different bakeries over the course of the year. If you haven’t tried the Bakery Boutique in Smithfield, RI or The Cake Gallery in Bristol RI you are missing out.
Thanks for the recommendations, Liz! I don’t get out to Rhode Island very often, but it looks like I’m going to have to make a special trip. :)
Great review! I’ve been drooling over all their photos on Facebook for a little while now and I hope to make it there one day. Especially after reading your mouth watering review!
I loved you write up. I too have a love affair with all cupcakes and have brought my 19 year old daughter on the “cupcake tour” Although our family thinks we are over the top, we have developed a way to cut and eat our cupcakes. We cut the cupcake into 1/4′s and that way we can taste 4 flavors in a sitting. We then critique, the cake for moistness, ratio of frosting (I love Cupcake Charlies overload of frosting) and then truesness of taste to cupcake title. Our favorite Cupcake Charlie’s cupcake is the Caramel Sea Salt and my only negative is they don’t offer it enough.
