A Wicked Fun Ladies Getaway!

In case you were trying to figure out the clue I gave Scarlett about her 10th birthday present, the apple stood for the Big Apple {as in NYC}. Suzi and I took her to see Wicked on Broadway! {I should have posted this sooner, but I was totally wiped out from the trip!}

We took the train down yesterday and stayed at Hotel Metro on West 35th Street.

We checked our luggage at the hotel {by the way, never visit New York with luggage that doesn’t have wheels}, and did a little shopping in SoHo.

While in SoHo, we stopped for cupcakes at Sugar Sweet Sunshine, which was one of the best cupcake bakeries in New York according to this article on Serious Eats. We tried the Bob, Sexy Red Velvet, Black & White, and Strawberry. Suzi really liked the “moose” {that’s how it’s spelled in their brochure!} frosting on the sexy red velvet, but I honestly wasn’t impressed by any of the cupcakes. The cakes themselves were kind of dry and mostly flavorless and the frostings were too sweet and hardened like day-old frosting from the supermarket. :/

After strolling around SoHo a bit longer, we headed back to the hotel to check in and gussy up for Wicked:

Scarlett got compliments all night on her adorable outfit:

We had dinner at Ellen’s Stardust Diner, where Suzi and I were in our element, singing along with the waiters, who are all aspiring Broadway actors. My favorite was the Phantom of the Opera duet, in which the male singer/waiter donned a paper towel and sunglasses in lieu of a mask:

We got to Gershwin Theatre with a few minutes to spare. Our seats were crazy good — four rows from the stage! We were off to the side, so it was a little hard to see some things happening on stage, but it was still amazing.

After the show, we went back to the hotel and crashed, our legs and feet tired from walking. {We clearly need to walk more.} Today was a bit less eventful, but I did find these amazingly cute shoes at a sample sale:

Plus we had lunch at Shake Shack in Madison Square Park.

And just before jumping on the train back home, we stopped to pick up cupcake minis at Baked by Melissa. After eating cupcakes from at least 5 different bakeries in New York, I still have to say Melissa’s are my favorite.

    Have you ever had Crumbs cupcakes?? I really wanted to go last time my bf and I were in NYC, but we ran out of time.

  • Yes, I have had Crumbs! I posted about them during my last big trip to NYC: http://www.poorandpretty.com/2010/03/nyc-days-2-3-and-4/

    I had the Raspberry Swirl, which was delicious but HUGE. I should have had some of the smaller ones so that I could try a bunch! I still have to say Baked by Melissa is my favorite though. Next time you head to NYC, if you take the train, there’s a Baked by Melissa right on 42nd street, just take a left out of Grand Central. :)

  • Baked by Melissa is one of my favorite cupcake stops too! So glad you like them, but sorry the first place was a let down. What a great weekend it sounds like you had! I’ve seen Wicked an embarrassing amount of times, but still love it. :)
